Community Works
What is the ‘Community Works’ Project?
Community Works was borne out of a growing desire within Diss Christian Community Church to provide help in the wider community, offering practical help to individuals and communities where help is not necessarily easily available elsewhere, and which will help towards providing a better quality of life.
In September 2007, DC3 launched the project known as ‘Community Works’ to serves the communities of Diss, Harleston and the surrounding villages. The primary objective of the project is to help people in practical ways and to help create community through offering assistance in a wide range of situations including the following:
People or communities who lack the finance to support themselves
The elderly without transport
The elderly who have no family nearby
Single parent families
The sick or disabled with no supportive network.
Tasks to be undertaken may include:
For individuals - general DIY, decorating, gardening, shopping, ironing, cleaning, transport etc.
For communities - working on school premises and in community centres, site clearance, litter picking etc, thus improving the environment in which we live.
What has happened so far?
Community Works has been involved with the following:
Planting a communal garden in Diss
A painting project at Harleston Primary School
Painting the mural in Diss pavilion followed by Party at the Pavilion in Diss park
Community Service week in Diss and surrounding villages completing many gardening and DIY tasks in conjunction with other churches in the town
Community Service day in Harleston followed by an evening’s entertainment
We have also undertaken many tasks for individuals who are not always able to do them for themselves.
We have set up a busy furniture project collecting and delivering furniture and household items
We have developed good working relationships with many local organisations.
Finance and partners for the project
Initially, the congregations of DC3, and other contributors, provided finance, which, with gift aid, totalled nearly £12,000. This gave the project a good start; enough to purchase a Community Works van. We have equipped the vehicle with DIY tools, items required for gardening jobs and many other materials. The van is also used to collect and deliver furniture and other resources to and from our storage area.
Generous contributions have been received from local businesses, a local residents’ association and housing association. In addition to ’start up’ costs there are ongoing costs related to the vehicle and other necessary resources, some of which will be provided free of charge by members of DC3.
All the work undertaken by Community Works is done on a voluntary basis and no charge is made for the services provided.
